Live your life while you have it. Life is a splendid gift – there is nothing small about it.
Florence Nightingale, 1820-1910
Give away your life, you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back- given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.
Every day, the people of the Oregon coast live in the threat of a tsunami. There are tsunami evacuation route signs posted along specific areas of Route 101, there are maps in all the establishments along those places. People who live in the hills at the end of those tsunami routes know that they will be accommodating “refugees” from the storm and have made provisions for that. The roar of the ocean is both a threat and a comfort.
In the face of this, the people of the coast of Oregon are among the kindest, generous people I have encountered in a very long time. No door is left unopened for another, no pedestrian need ever worry that they will be rushed over because cars stop so far in advance you could walk to and from across the street and not have a worry. In fact, pedestrians don’t even look some of the time because they have that kind of confidence. Drivers are cautious because one false move could land you in a ravine, over the cliffs, in the bay. I heard very few emergency vehicles.
The threat of constant danger in this case has affected the people for the good. I don’t know, perhaps they were always like this, but I have no frame of reference but my recent visit.
I read the scripture this morning, and found a song that embodies what Jesus did. For us. He knew what was coming from the beginning, and still he gave his life away.
I have included this song “You Gave your Life Away” by Paul Beloche. It is soothing, simple and true. Today, I am going to give a “shout out” to our Director of Music and our Church Organist, Tim and Debbie Jenks, who give their lives away in music every day of their lives. I dedicate this song to their generosity without which I would be much less of a writer, a singer, a person.
Today, as you go through your routines, give your life away. And thank someone who has made a difference in your life.
Because of Him,
Your gave your life away, the story.
