Luminaria

The soul is a breath of living spirit, that with excellent sensitivity, permeates the entire body to give it life.  Just so, the breath of the air makes the arth fruitful.  Thus the air is the soul of the earth, mositening it, greening it.

Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179

German Nun, Christian Writer, poet

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing; 15 so that you will [a]prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you [b]appear as[c]lights in the world, 16 holding [d]fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.

Philippians 2:14-16

The choir that I sing in has had the privilege of rehearsing at a home on a peninsula called Eaton’s Neck in Northport.  The house sits on an inlet overlooking the water from two sides.  There is a room that seems as if it were created for a choir to rehearse in; white baby grand, long sectional couch that seats many.  Table and chairs.  The host and hostess always add hot beverages, cookies, things that truly say “Welcome!” when we arrive.  While the choir is rehearsing in this beautiful, soul calming setting, our host is cooking and serving dinner for his wife, that she might eat and have music in the background.  Live music.  Sacred music.

The last time we rehearsed there was just before Christmas. The house was beautifully decorated inside and out. Tastefully, completely, precisely.  Not overdone but full of welcome and love.  We did not know that our hostess had been visiting her father who is ill.  We complimented her on the beauty of their home and were quickly corrected.  “It is Richard who did all of this! I just got home today.” Then the volume of his love for her hit me, along with the metaphor that it was/is for the love of God for us.  It inspired these words :

Luminaria

for Richard and Lisa

On the cusp of a spit of land

there glows a place.

Hands have prepared

a welcome such as befits

a queen.

The entertainment arrives

up the winding drive,

through the front door,

we are greeted, celebrated

given comforts, chorally

move to the music room.

Hands prepare:

dinner,

a mood.

They labor after a love that is wide

enough to include all of her world.

Even the moon took its shine

from the hematite sheen

that reflects it.

by L.T. Dickman

Today, be a light upon the water of someone’s life, and look for the lights that God has set out for you.

Because of Him,

Linda
