35 Sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, [a]he shall be last of all and servant of all.”
He knew his past, and that of everyone at the table. He knew his future, and that of everyone at the table. He was present with them.
Their eyes were upon him, their ears not always so engaged. He had to do something to make the lesson real, practical.
So he lived it. He served them. His life was the metaphor for being first.
What a task! To follow him, to live like he did and not be judgmental.
