Where Feet May Fail

In a dream you are never eighty.
      ~ Anne Sexton
13-14 “Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.
     ~ Matthew 7:13-14
I have a friend who is over 80 who tells me, “When you are eighty, you get something from the menu, but you don’t get to choose.” – YB
It seems as if some of my friends are being dealt some very unexpected cards at a much earlier age.  One in particular is breaking my heart right now.  They are wrestling with a disease, a backbreaking situation and another soul shattering situation.
That is all I can reveal in this particular case.  But you can insert your worst case scenario in the blanks.  None of knows the ways of God.  None of us can see the big picture, for the most part, in our own lives, but we can choose to sing, we can choose to praise, we can choose to help others despite our circumstances. God uses that “other” focus to distract us from ourselves, to move us closer to God, to smooth those few (!) rough edges we may still have.
Could you pray for my friend today?  Could you ask God tp give them perfect peace and to remove the fear?  And just for that moment, or continued moments, watch the way God uses you.
