Lord, I’m Ready Now

The passions are like fire, useful in a thousand ways and dangerous only in one, through their excess.

In light of all this, here’s what I want you to do. While I’m locked up here, a prisoner for the Master, I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don’t want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don’t want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.

    ~ Ephesians 4:1-3

I used to work with these two amazing women, one a singer, the other an inventor.  One married the love of her life, the other refuses to marry the love of hers. What they have in common other than that we worked together is that their significant others are both alcoholics.  The younger of the two went to the older one and asked her what to do as she loves this man and would love to marry him, but he is so bent on self destruction and she doesn’t want their son to be a victim, or witness to that behavior.
The first woman(the singer) who had many, many years of experience told the second, “Alcohol will always be a part of his life, seen or unseen.  It will (paraphrase,) be a battle every day, you just have to be aware and keep moving forward.” The second woman (the inventor) took the advice and did just that, but maintained her legal distance.  I ran into the inventor recently, her man had checked himself into a rehab center after a hospital scare and was on the mend. She is cautiously optimistic and moving forward.
The singer is making is through because she is choosing to let the love be stronger than all the pain.  Each hard memory she has, she is lifting up to God in song, and he is always in the audience at the coffeehouse, loving her, supporting her, moving forward with her.

Today,  lift up those you know who are dealing with passion gone awry.  Lift them up, lift yourself up into the cleansing fountain of the blood of Jesus Christ.  Build on the love, lift up the pain to the only one who knows what to do with it, and keep moving forward in love.
Lord, help me to forgive myself for those times of excess, for those times when other things filled the spot that belongs to you.  Help me to move forward in your love, and to be willing to listen to those who need an ear.
