If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
~ 1 Cor. 13:3-7
I was watching one of the NCIS shows last night. Agents had been tortured. They survived with their lives, their psyches wounded. One of the agents, in the retelling, told another agent that all he could see when he was being tortured was her face, her smile. He could hear her laugh, and that got him through the ordeal. Many of us go through trials, hopefully not of this nature, but we go through them.
I was physically and mentally abused in my first marriage. I remember picturing headlines, and praying to Jesus, concentrating on His face, his name, his love, his ability to get me through it, his ability to use it for his glory to help others after all was said and done.
Whatever you are going through, focus on something pleasant just beyond the pain. Focus on a favorite place, the love of a special friend, the shoreline, Orion. God will bring you through.
Lord, plunge me into your light. Help me to remember to look for you everywhere, even in the darkest times in my life. Help me to rely on you for my next breath and those that follow. Help me to pray that prayer for others that your glory might shine in everything I give to you, all the pain I experience, the relief of knowing it was you that saved me.
Because of Him,
