The 5th Dimenions – The Declaration
I asked my students to vote on something yesterday. One student told me that he did not vote, because he was okay either way. I explained that if you don’t vote, you really don’t have a right to complain when the outcome is determined.
Of course I couldn’t stop thinking about what the “right” answer really is, especially with this upcoming election dividing folks so. I think, if it had been an actual paper ballot, I would have asked the children to write in their vote and give a supporting reason for their choice, but in an election, there is no luxury afforded that allows for that.
When I worked for the election board, and the machines had paper scrolls, folks wrote in votes for everyone from Pat Paulsen to Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
Ben Franklin was once asked what kind of government we have:
“Well, Doctor, what have we got, a Republic or a Monarchy?
“A Republic, if you can keep it” was his reply.
It is true that we live in a Republic. It is true that you have many rights, including the right not to vote. All I implore you to do is consider making your voice heard, and live responsibly as a citizen of this (and any other country) you are a resident of.
