A few years ago, an acquaintance of mine came to me looking so very sad. She shared with me that her husband had lost his job and they did not know if they would keep their house. She asked for prayer. She got it. Over the next few months; she got a job at her church, her family got closer, they started spending very carefully. I cannot remember whether or not they moved, but I do know that they stayed in town. She came to me regularly to let me know how they were doing, and all in all, things were better than ever. She was more “real,” no pretense, soft. She knew who she was.
When she came to me with a big smile on her face, I was sure that he had gotten a job. This happy woman shared that her husband had returned to church! I don’t think I had ever seen her that happy, then or since. Within months, the news came that he had gotten a job. I don’t understand why, but she held her head higher while at the same time seemed to exhibit a different, prouder behavior. We lost touch, and I really don’t know what happened to her. I know that the family is still in town, and there is even a veil of “privileged” that seems to cloud their vision.
Today as you experience the diversity in humanity, remember who you are. Good fortune and bad change us, but in all we must remember. This scene from the Lion King makes me weep every time I see it. Not just a few tears, weeping happens. Too often I forget who I am and the lesson comes home to rest.
Walk in it today church, walk in who you are, through the tangles of this earthly life and into the light.
