If you always do what you always did…

If you are still talking about what you did yesterday, you haven’t done much today.

            ~ Author Unknown
Oh! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!
            ~ Romans 15:13

I guess I heard it first when I was younger.  Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. It was attributed to Albert Einstein, Ben Franklin, Mark Twain.  The bottom line is it applied.  But it didn’t sink in again until I started going to Weight Watchers.  My instructor said, “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.”
I thought she was funny until I realized that I was trying to lose weight employing the same methods I had in the past.  This went along well and good until I was in a place where I thought I had no friends.  My daughter said, “If you always look at it the same way, you will never see anything differently.”  She was right, and wise to tell me, even though there is no way I wanted to hear it.
Then we went on vacation (my husband and I) and I noticed that I felt better ordering certain things from the menu.  At the end of the week, I felt my body changing and I remembered those wise words.  I needed to change something up.  So, when I returned home, I started taking the “Fitbit” challenges that my family lay down, I started to do more at the gym, and in a different order.  I had no idea that it was preparing me for something else.
Recently, my husband was in the hospital after shortness of breath.  It was a new challenge, and totally unexpected (at least for me.) But what it meant was, calling in the prayer warriors (always a good thing,) listening to the doctors in a new way, and being resolved to move forward toward health.
The same thing applies to our faith.  If we repeat things over and over, and expect something different, we are in for no surprises. But if we start to really listen, be true to what we hear the Lord tell us, instead of wanting to please everyone around us, the change begins to occur.  As we move closer to the Lord, and our spouses, friends, sisters and brothers in faith are trying to move closer to the Lord, we inevitably move closer to each other on this journey.
Take a look at your thinking with regard to routine, change, diet, etc.  Do you have “stinkin’ thinkin’?”  Negative self-talk?  Are you able to receive praise and say thank you, standing in the light of God’s grace?  The fingers are all pointing at me, not  you.  I am just sharing what is helping, and looking forward to your responses as you see the joy that is set before you.
     Because of Him,

Whatsoever Things

Occasionally ask, “What is the connection between what I want most in life and anything I plan to do today?”
                                                                                                                            ~ Robert Brault

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
                                                                                                                           ~ Philippians 4:8

For those of you who are not on social media, this weekend, a “generator” came out and if you clicked on it and added your name, you could find out “something about yourself.”  If you did not like what you found, you could ask for another remark.  I tried it at least 10 times and received ten very sarcastic, snarky pieces of information. Each entry ends with _____ is smart. Be like _____.  It is a reward for their snarky opinion of the entrant. Sometimes these things are fun and worthy of playing.

You may tell me I am too sensitive.  But, if I saw a sign like that when I walked into the room, it would not give me joy.  If would feed that crack of darkness.  The one that leads to all kinds of self doubt, and being even harder on myself than I already am.
I saw the scripture for today and felt the confirmation in my spirit for not entering in to that particular “generator.” There is one person who responded on the website for this item, and she had the same response I did, and was subsequently supported by over 38,000 folks who agreed with her. It was heartening to be validated.  It was even more heartening to know that I had done what was right for me.  We make hundreds of little decisions every day.  They seem silly, crazy, unimportant but each one feeds your spirit.
My daughters are good reminders for me that Philippians 4:8 is a good place to live.  They help me redirect my thoughts when I get to a couple of “pet” hurts.  Thank you Lord for my daughters and for their willingness to remind me that I was the one who taught them to think that way…and to get out of the dumpster thinking that I am in.

Lord, thank you for the reminders to keep our eyes up, our ears open, our hearts tuned to your spirit.  Help me to dwell in the lovely things.

Because of Him,
Linda
